What is vapor density?

Vapor density is the density of a gas relative to the density of air. It is also sometimes referred to as specific gravity or relative density. Vapor density can be calculated by dividing the molecular weight of the gas by the molecular weight of air. The resulting number is the vapor density of the gas.

The vapor density of a gas is an important parameter when it comes to handling and storage of gases. Heavier gases have a higher vapor density, and therefore tend to settle at low points and can accumulate in confined spaces. This can create a potential hazard as the gas can displace oxygen and cause asphyxiation.

Vapor density is also used in the design of industrial processes involving gases. Understanding the vapor density of the gases involved can help engineers determine how the gases will behave in different conditions and ensure safe handling and storage.
